Most
insurance companies now cover chiropractic treatment but you should
check with your company. Many GPs now recognise and recommend patients
for treatment and there is now a move, supported by the Ministry of
Health, towards practices actually paying for treatment. At the moment
no practices within the Farnborough area provide this service but
it is hoped that this situation will change in due course.
A normal,
first visit to the clinic would involve a detailed case history both
chiropractic and medical, examination of the spine and joints, the
muscular system and the neurological system. An X-Ray would be taken
if it were felt appropriate. You would have your problem explained,
described how it can be rectified and then, with consent, treatment
would begin.
Sometimes
there are problems that are not treatable by chiropractic and the
chiropractor would then refer to the appropriate specialist or recommend
a different course of action. Most treatments follow a pattern that
is determined by the patient's response to the treatment and their
speed of recovery. It is usual for treatments to be needed twice weekly
while the pain is subsiding and then as the patient improves so the
treatments become less often and the onus is put on the patient to
exercise and stretch the affected areas and take some responsibility
for their own health.
What
can chiropractic treat ?
There seems to be some confusion about exactly what chiropractic is
and what it can do. Basically the aim is to balance and rectify the
loss of normal function that has occurred to the spine or any other
joint as a result of some form of trauma or prolonged bad posture.
Many complaints can be linked to working at the computer, driving
a car or even spending all day on the telephone not to mention bad
lifting technique and back injuries brought on by lifting and twisting
type actions.
Many symptoms can occur as a result: Headache - Shoulder Pain - Arm
Pain - Tightness across the top of the Shoulders Reduced Neck Motion
- Low Back Pain - Leg Pain - Reduced Trunk Flexibility - Infantile
Colic – Cystitis.
If the spine cannot function properly it will start to cause pain
and then the body has to adapt to function as best as it can.
Additional
stresses on other joints and muscles are created and these too can
start to become stiff and sore. Many problems in the limbs can be
caused such as; Shoulder pain - Tennis Elbow - Knee Pain - Ankle Pain
- Arthritis.
If you
are not sure whether your problem is relevant either ring (01252 404240)
or e-mail (rob@farnborough-chiropractic.co.uk)
and they will try to point you in the right direction.
Contraindications:
There is no reason why people with osteoporosis or osteoarthritis
should not benefit from treatment. The treatment is not aimed at curing
these types of problems but that the musculoskeletal pain can be treated
and managed in some way.
There are
conditions that do not lend themselves to treatment and special considerations
are always made to children, geriatrics and people with other existing
medical problems that are not related to their chiropractic complaint.
